The Story of A Shelter Dog

29894854[1].jpg

After John Woestendiek adopted a shelter stray named Ace, the reporter for the Baltimore Sun faced continuous questions about his dog's heritage. So Woestendiek plunged into the task of tracing Ace's place in the world, as only a seasoned digger can. The result is a seven-part series in the Sun, with an accompanying "dogumentary," starring Woestendiek and his woofer.

The reporter speaks to shelter workers, vets, even an animal psychic. He sends his dog's DNA to a lab, which sends back results, kind of. In the process, Woestendiek learns a larger lesson: We humans can't know all the answers about our dear dogs. Often, that mystery of unquestionable love can be the deepest bond of all.
