Read It And Weep

A beautifully-written story in the New York Times magazine captures the heartbreak and joys of an animal shelter in Austin, Texas. Charles Siebert, the writer, went there to report on the alarming trend of abandonment. More dogs and cats are being surrendered to shelters for reasons as dire as aggressive behavior and as silly as the pet's fur didn't match the decor. Siebert finds a lot more than he imagined when he becomes captivated by a twice-abandoned stray named Olive and begins a feverish race to adopt her. Dog Lady was quite moved by the statistics and anecdotes in Siebert's piece. The saga of Olive turns into the surprising moral of the story. See a slide show with pictures of the shelter orphans and the captivating Olive. (Sorry, guys, you'll have to pay to read this.
