Don't Blame the Dog

Dear Dog Lady,

We have a one-and-one-half year old golden retriever, Casey. We are contemplating getting rid of him because he has been eating our TV remotes and very expensive cell phones and regular phones. We have even tried to keep these things out of his reach but he still manages to jump up and get them. I should also mention he is not neutered. How could we help correct this problem? Would neutering help?

Alyssa, Cuyahoga Falls, OH

Alyssa, yes, neuter your dog. Dog Lady does not have patience with owners who behave irresponsibly and then blame problems on the crazy dog. Spaying or neutering a house pet is an act of kindness. After the simple procedure, Casey could become a calmer, healthier dog.

However, neutering him will not take away his appetite for electronics. Your dog is still technically a puppy. This means he wants to chow down on any toy. So provide him with lots of items to sink his teeth into -- bully sticks, rawhides, bones etc. Go into any pet store and you’ll see racks of these. Instead of buying another fancy battery-powered plaything for you, supply Casey with an array of canine chompies. Substitute one when you see him chewing something he shouldn’t.

Certainly, it’s your choice to banish your dog because he has destroyed expensive remotes, cell phones and regular phones. But have you given him any other choice? Are you taking care of his needs? You must exercise Casey enough so he wants to sleep instead of destroying things. You could provide him a crate so he has a safe, contained place to hang out when you are not at home.

Alyssa, be conscientious about your gadgets and stow them securely so your dog is not tempted to chow down on them. You say you “tried” to put these things out of his reach. Don’t try, just do it. C’mon, stop whining and grow up. Your dog will surely follow.
