Ear Signals

Dear Dog Lady,

We have two West Highland white/Schnauzer cross puppies that are now four months old. Over the last few days we have noted that they both frequently tend to position their ears back against their heads. This is a new behavior for them. What does this indicate?

Dianne, Tiverton, RI

Dianne, don’t let flattened ears get lost in translation. When ears go back, it usually means: “Hi, friend -- or much bigger dog. I'm a little nervous. Do you come in peace? Glad to see ya. Can I kiss your feet? Or sniff your butt?”

When Westies (or Westschnauzis) put their ears back against their head, it usually means the furballs are experiencing deferential fear or submission. In your case, Dog Lady believes your puppies have bonded with you and are bowing respectfully. They are acknowledging you’re the chief cheese and sending signals: “Oh, by the way, dear mistress, speaking of cheese, would you give me a piece? Or a belly rub.”
