Chew-Chew Chessie

Dear Dog Lady,

Chessie, a wonderful pound puppy about seven years old, has suddenly started the habit of chewing on shoes or book-bindings. I am getting him long rawhide chewies, but worry that he is eating so much leather. I am not away from home often, not more than four hours. What to do?

Jan, sounds like Chessie has become anxious in your absence. Leather proof. Move the books and shoes out of harm’s way. Better yet, corral your Chessie while you’re not at home. A crate (a big cage is the politically incorrect description) is a very decent habitat for a dog left alone. Make sure you outfit the crate with a comfy blanket, a couple of chewies, and your pet should be a happy camper.

You might also create a penned area in the kitchen or family room so Chessie has her own safe place away from the shoes and books. Make sure your dog has treats, chew toys, and water in the pen. Also, don’t worry about rawhides as long as you dole them out sensibly.

Ensure Chessie gets plenty of exercise so your dog is more inclined to sleep when you’re not home. And don’t indulge in long goodbyes when you leave. Simply turn and walk out the door without looking back. If you act blasé around transitions, Chessie, taking the cue from you, will be less stressed.
