Wet Behind the Ears

Dear Dog Lady,

I have a nine-week-old pit [pitbull terrier]. I wanna clip his ears off. When is a good time to do it?

Dear Dog Lady,

Can dogs get their ears pierced?

People, please. These sort of questions make Dog Lady’s ears perk up with alarm. There is no good time to clip a pit bull’s ears off unless you want to turn the pit puppy into a scared and aggressive warrior, which is unlawful and unconscionable. Haven’t you watched “Animal Precinct” on cable’s Animal Planet? Seems every time the heroic animal control officers discover a pit bull with cut ears, the animal is a mess and must be put down in the interest of public safety.

And why pierce a dog’s ears? Sure, Dog Lady can make fun of such a thing, but, in reality, dogs don’t like piercings or wearing chandelier earrings. Do not mutilate your dog’s ears for any reason. For animals, these body parts are finely tuned instruments of survival.
